APM Terminals has Witteveen + Bos made the technical design for the canopy of the "Main Gate". The canopy marks the entrance truck to the site. Containers are here checked in and out and the drivers receive instructions on how to proceed route for them. The canopy protects them during the procedure Check from the elements on the Maasvlakte.

APM Terminals asked for their new "Flagship Terminal" a design that meant more than a standard roof. Witteveen + Bos, a leading engineering company with over 60 years experience and over 1,000 employees, has responded to this by setting an archway for the main construction of the canopy. The arches, with a span of 25 meters and a height of 8 meters, standing diagonally to the side. They provide the canopy of stability and bear the double curved roof surface which is suspended from the arcs. The roof deck is made up of triangular with Kalzip-coated segments which are separated by light streets. The big advantages of the aluminum coating applied include: the low weight, the weather resistance and that it can be disassembled and recycled.

Dr. ir. Paul Teeuwen, structural engineer at Witteveen + Bos, confirms: "Ahead of the design, we have recognized immediately the benefits of BIM. The design of the canopy lent itself, given the degree of rehearsal, excellent for setting up a parametric model and was, by literally turning the knobs, constantly refined. The structural implications of the refinements were thus in real-time. "

Given the complexity of the structure is chosen to calculate the wind load on the canopy with CFD calculation (Computational Fluid Dynamics), and the design to investigate in addition, on the basis of a printed 3D model in a wind tunnel. The result of the wind tunnel survey consists of 25 wind load patterns for the structure. These are included in a static analysis of the 3D structure which is formed with the CAE software package Scia Engineer. Also, with this, the natural frequencies of the structure determined in order to quantify the sensitivity to wind vibrations.
